Like "Mommie Dearest"'s Joan Crawford, Recology isn't a fan of metal hangers, but not because of creased clothing.

People put wire hangers in the blue recycling bins, but they can't be recycled, says Robert Reed, spokesman for the city's waste removal and recycling company. The reason is they jam sorting equipment and can contaminate finished bales that are sold to paper mills and manufacturers.

"So how do you recycle a wire hanger from the dry cleaners?" asks Reed rhetorically. "It's a trick question. You don't. You take it back. You are going there anyway to drop off and pick up your dry cleaning. That is reuse, which is even better than recycling."

Wire coat hangers are just one item that can confuse residents looking to recycle waste materials. (See the above gallery for all of the others.)
